We have just enjoyed a highly successful and engaging Hoe Bridge Maths Week 2026, which took place in the week following Pi Day (14th March – 3.14 for the mathematicians among us!).
Maths Week is designed to enrich and extend the curriculum, offering children the opportunity to apply their mathematical skills in creative, practical and often unexpected ways. Throughout the week, pupils across the Prep School embraced a wide range of activities that encouraged problem-solving, collaboration and curiosity.
This year, rather than inviting an external provider, we were delighted to design and deliver our own series of themed “treasure hunt” style challenges. Each year group experienced a unique mathematical adventure tailored to their age and interests.
Year 3 pupils embarked on a “Camping Trip”, while Year 4 set sail on a “Pirate Treasure Hunt”. Year 5 entered the magical world of Harry Potter, tackling puzzles and challenges inspired by the theme. Year 6 explored codes and ciphers, using their new skills to solve the intriguing mystery of the “Murder in the Maths Department”.
Our older pupils also rose impressively to the challenge. Year 7 were given a virtual budget of £3,000 to plan a four-day trip to New York. This task required careful financial decision-making, as they balanced costs for flights, accommodation, sightseeing and meals. They quickly discovered the importance of evaluating trade-offs—such as whether a higher cost for direct flights might be preferable to a longer, multi-stop journey. The project culminated in confident presentations of their itineraries using PowerPoint.
Year 8 took part in a lively team maths relay and quiz, while Year 9 rounded off the week with an exciting and immersive visit to Escape Hunt in Woking.
Across all year groups, pupils demonstrated enthusiasm, resilience and excellent teamwork. It was wonderful to see them applying their mathematical knowledge in such varied and enjoyable contexts, strengthening not only their skills but also their confidence and appreciation of the subject.
