GOING UP: SMOOTHING THE TRANSITION FROM NURSERY TO SCHOOL

18 June 2026

Starting school is a big milestone—for children and parents alike. While nursery is a place of comfort, play and early learning, the move to “big school” can feel like a significant leap. At Hoe Bridge School, careful planning and strong communication help make that transition as smooth and positive as possible.

Building trust begins early. From the moment a child is registered, the nursery team arranges home visits and settling-in sessions with both parents and the child. “We start developing strong relationships right from the outset, so we really understand each family,” says Amanda Willis, Head of Pre-Prep.

That sense of connection continues throughout nursery, laying the groundwork for a confident transition into Reception. A key focus is on developing emotional resilience, independence, and self-regulation—skills that are just as important as early literacy and numeracy.

Because all Hoe Bridge nursery pupils progress to Reception at Hoe Bridge, children benefit from a carefully structured introduction to their next environment. Throughout the year, they spend time in Reception spaces, particularly outdoors, joining in activities alongside older pupils. This helps them build familiarity, confidence, and key social skills.

Reception teachers also spend time with nursery children, so when the new term begins, there are already familiar faces waiting for them. A popular highlight is the “moving-on day,” when children spend time in their new classroom with their future teachers—an experience designed to build excitement and ease any anxieties.

For parents, clear communication is central to the process. The nursery team regularly shares insights into children’s learning, helping families understand how everyday activities support development. For example, fine motor tasks such as threading are explained not just as play, but as essential preparation for early writing.

“Play here is purposeful,” says Ms Willis. “Every activity is designed to build the foundational skills children need for the next stage of their learning.”

To further support families, Hoe Bridge hosts information evenings before children start Reception, outlining expectations and offering practical guidance for supporting learning at home. An open-door policy ensures parents feel involved and informed throughout. Hoe Bridge also offer termly settling-in sessions, which help prepare the children for the next stage of their journey by building familiarity with their new environment, teachers and routines, ensuring a smooth and seamless transition.

While the move to school naturally introduces more structure, the focus remains on nurturing confident, enthusiastic learners.

With strong relationships, thoughtful preparation, and a shared approach between school and home, children at Hoe Bridge are set up to begin their school journey feeling secure, capable and ready to thrive.
