The progression from Reception to Year 1 and on to Year 2 is again made seamless for your child. Their school day represents another clearly defined step forward in learning, still balanced with indoor and outdoor work, fun and ample physical exercise. We also introduce a wide range of after school activities from Year 1.
Literacy, maths, science, history, geography, ICT and religious education become more clearly defined and challenging. We teach joined-up writing from the outset to encourage the most natural flow. Reading levels, extending vocabulary and topic-based learning continues always with new topics to engage, inspire and delight your child. Basic coding is introduced helping the children to understand and embrace technology. New techniques and styles are introduced in art, and application brought into music with children writing simple rhythms, melodies and reading notes on the stave. Children also have the chance to take private violin lessons, sing in the choir from Year 1 and join ukulele and recorder groups from Year 2. French is also taught for the first time in Year 1 through fun and engaging activities.
Sport skills continue to be developed with ball games including football, tag rugby, cricket and hockey introduced according to the term, and athletics and swimming becoming more advanced.
Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship Education (PSHCE) focuses on the concepts of respect, relationships with peers and personal achievement. Closely aligned with the Hoe Bridge Way and Code of Conduct our PSHCE curriculum forms an important part of developing essential life skills and preparation for responsible citizenship.
We work closely with the Year 3 teaching staff to ensure a successful transition to Prep. An important part of this is familiarisation. Summer term sees Year 3 teaching staff spending time with their Year 2 colleagues, getting to know the children and discussing their individual progress including standardised assessment results. Similarly, children in Year 2 enjoy lunch in the Prep Cafeteria everyday and weekly games and ICT lessons with Prep staff, all helping them in an easy transition into our Prep department.
