PSHE

This section describes the way in which the five outcomes of the Every Child Matters agenda are addressed at Hoe Bridge School. Many of the guiding principles are embraced in the school’s ethos.

Principles of the teaching and learning of PSHE

Personal, Social and Health Education is at the heart of our teaching at Hoe Bridge School. Our aim is to work towards achieving the five outcomes set out in Every Child Matters:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

These principles remain sound throughout the age range of the school, namely that successful Personal, Social and Emotional development is critical for young children in all aspects of their lives and gives them the best opportunity for success in all other areas of learning and development.

Aims

  • To help children achieve a knowledge and understanding of right and wrong, life skills, morals
  • To enable children to explore personal relationships and to take account of the effect their actions may have on others
  • To develop a moral code by which to live within the school as a community and within the wider world
  • To enable children to explore and understand themselves, other cultures, beliefs and humanity
  • To enable children to communicate with others, children and adults
  • To understand the importance of health, how to make healthy choices and how to deal with temptation
  • To acquire self-care skills and develop independence

Skills include being able to

  • Develop positive relationships
  • Appreciate others, their needs and their contributions
  • Share and take turns
  • Express feelings
  • Understand and control emotions
  • Show self discipline

Attitudes include

  • Having self esteem
  • Showing respect
  • Showing tolerance
  • Appreciation

Strategies for teaching

Lessons are timetabled, circle time is used and teachers may be flexible as the need arises, but there is a clear scheme of work formulated term by term for each year group.

Much of the teaching of PSHE in the Prep is done incidentally by the staff being role models and setting an example to the children. Children are encouraged to acquire skills and develop positive attitudes during their learning.

In year 3 this is taught by form teachers
In year 4 the subject is taught by form teachers
In year 5 by form teachers
