French

Bonjour! In Years 1 and 2 we enjoy a weekly French lesson. These are interactive sessions which aim to provide the children with a basic vocabulary and the ability to hold simple conversations in French. The emphasis is on speaking and listening in order to familiarise the children with the sounds of the French language. They particularly enjoy learning action songs and rhymes many of which quickly become firm favourites!

We often hear that French is one of the children’s “best lessons” as they get such fun out of learning a new language. They take pride in building up a bank of vocabulary and can often be heard practising new words in the playground! By the end of Year 2 most of the children are able to ask and answer questions such as “Comment t’appelles tu?” and “Quel age as tu?” Many will also be confident at counting up to 20 and saying the names of colours and family members.
